MAUN – Some beauty queens in Maun are savouring the chance to bask in the spotlight in as far as international beauty competitions are concerned thanks to the efforts of the Boikanyo Modelling Extraordinaire (BME).
The latter is a modelling agency based in Maun aimed at identifying and developing talent from scratch and to transform it in order to attain the level of stardom for models of repute who can favourably compete internationally.
BME was founded by Boikanyo Phenyo Trust who represented Botswana at the Ms Commonwealth International last year where she ultimately emerged as the first princes.
This year a model from BME, Kepeo Nkakobang qualified for the Miss Commonwealth International finals to be held in London in October this year.
Another upcoming beauty queen, Angela Atlang, a Form Four student at the Maun Senior Secondary School qualified for Ms Teen Commonwealth finals 2011 to be held in London. The BME promoter, Onkatametse Meti said the Botswana Embassy to the United Kingdom assisted a Ms Commonwealth contestant last year and is expected to do the same this year.
He however pleaded with potential sponsors to consider assisting BME saying it needed concrete support from Batswana so that it supports their children to nurture their talents. “Therefore support from the government, individuals and government would be appreciated,” he emphasized.
Meti highlighted that there is a common perception that there are no celebrities in Botswana.
He said this type of thinking does not augur well for the good of potential local achievers as Batswana fail to support fellow locals from the very beginning but only come to the party when people are already in the thick of things and are about to or have attained stardom.
Another beauty queen, Portia Sam has made it to the Ms Charity Commonwealth International which requires her to be engaged in charity work locally. She is involved with a charity home named Motse wa Kgalalelo which is still at its infancy stage in Maun.
Meanwhile Lesego George has made it to the Ms Global International to be held in Jamaica in September 2011. The theme of the Ms Global International is uniting the world through beauty and tourism.
Meti said they are planning a fashion event in London titled taking pride in being a Motswana to promote Botswana culture, attire, music and tourism Another beauty queen, Kenaleone Mpho from BME has qualified for the World’s Most Beautiful Woman (WMBW) to be staged in Las Vegas, USA WMBW is an online beauty pageant and the contestants were voted online.
In an interview, the BME founder, Boikanyo Trust said a weakness observed in most online beauty pageants is that they do not have any quality control measure over the pictures that are presented.
She said that many of the pictures do not enjoy appropriate control mechanism intended to prevent people from using multiple accounts to vote and can just rank as popularity contests where friends and family members can vote almost anybody to ensure they win.
Trust however said there are exceptions, for example the search for the World’s Most Beautiful Woman in which contests who do enjoy quality control mechanisms are closely supervised to ensure a system of fair play.
“For me being a beauty queen is about what good charitable works I can achieve with a title that I couldn’t achieve without it and that’s what most good beauty queens do particularly in respect of the Miss Commonwealth International ones”, she said. BOPA
